Spiritual Bypassing

Spiritual bypassing uses elevated language to skip the messy, human work of feeling, grieving, boundary-setting, and repair.

  • “There is no one here to be hurt”
  • “Everything is perfect as it is”
  • “Morality is dualistic”
  • “Trauma is just a story”
  • “The teacher is beyond ordinary rules”

Bypassing can invalidate real suffering, protect abusers, and stall development. It masquerades as wisdom.

  • Include emotion without believing every story
  • Practice both absolute insight and relative care
  • Welcome support from therapy, community, and honest friends

Notice a current difficulty. Ask:

  1. What spiritual phrase am I using to avoid this?
  2. What would fully facing it require?
  3. Who might I harm if I stay above it all?
