Spiritual Bypassing

Spiritual bypassing uses elevated language to skip the messy, human work of feeling, grieving, boundary-setting, and repair.
Common forms

- “Everything is perfect as it is”
- “Morality is dualistic”
- “Trauma is just a story”
- “The teacher is beyond ordinary rules”
Why it is harmful
Section titled “Why it is harmful”Bypassing can invalidate real suffering, protect abusers, and stall development. It masquerades as wisdom.
What helps instead
Section titled “What helps instead”- Include emotion without believing every story
- Practice both absolute insight and relative care
- Welcome support from therapy, community, and honest friends

- What spiritual phrase am I using to avoid this?
- What would fully facing it require?
- Who might I harm if I stay above it all?
